Berlin, 1926. Dr Tamar Serach is about to become one of Prussia’s first female senior police officials. She is Jewish, ambitious, respected—and in search of a woman to love.

A discreet advertisement in a lesbian magazine brings Clara into her life. At first, Weimar Berlin seems to promise freedoms unimaginable only a generation earlier: nightclubs and women’s clubs flourish, Magnus Hirschfeld challenges conventional ideas of sex and gender, and the police themselves debate whether the law has any right to dictate how people dress, whom they love, or who they are.

But the freedom is fragile.
